How to play Forty Thieves Solitaire

Start Forty Thieves Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Build eight suit foundations from ace to king. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Two decks, ten columns, single-pass stock, no recycle. Free solo play, no wagering.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Build eight suit foundations from ace to king. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Move one card at a time; build down in the same suit. Empty columns accept one card.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

A club 5 can move onto a club 6, but a whole run cannot move together. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
