How to play Tangram

Choose a round of Tangram and settle into its rules. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
